Is it possible to patent the color?

Yes, it is. The certain color or shade may be the part of a design patent, that's to be an integral part of a trademark, graphical interface, product, or even an object (and this also happens). From the point of view of marketing the monopoly on a specific color is simply meaningless, because if the competitor wants to color the product in a particular color no one and nothing will prevent him from using a slightly different, unregistered shade. From the point of view of the mass consumer, this slightly different color will not differ from the patented one. It is not easy to protect the corporate color in practice, but there are precedents.

The Louboutins. The red sole of the shoes became the hallmark of the French designer Christian Louboutin. In 2008 the US Patent and Trademark Office registered it as a trademark. The registration in Russia was achieved only in 2012.

Brown-Eiffel. The Eiffel Tower has been repeatedly repainted throughout its history from yellow to red-brown. But the last few decades the tower has always been painted in the «Brown-Eiffel» — officially patented color. It is close to the natural shade of bronze.

Vanish.  It is also worth mentioning the trademark Vanish, which is the holder of the purple color among the manufacturers of stain removers

The russian practice. In 2016 several large Russian companies: Sberbank, MTS and Gazprom received exclusive rights to use their company colors (green, red and blue respectively). The patent is valid only for the registration of trademarks in a particular field. For example, if a mobile phone operator uses red in his logo, then such company has the potential to acquire a headache in the person of MTS.

And although the colors have so far been the object of controversy extremely rarely, it seems that everything is still ahead.
