The study of animals color perception

Источник

Do animals perceive color in the same way as humans? Each of us asked this question sooner or later. But it is not so easy to give an accurate and exhaustive answer to it. The human has color vision, so it is quite difficult for us to imagine a completely discolored world. Naturally, we have an assumption that all living things see about the same as we do, but this is far from the case.

The color is the difficult concept to determine and generally quite complex. It is not easy to investigate the animals color perception, so scientists still have some difficulties in interpreting this ability. After all, in fact, no object has its own color, it simply absorbs white daylight and reflects it in a certain spectrum. For example, the leaves of trees reflect all parts of the spectrum except the actual green, thus is we see green vegetation.

How were the experiments conducted

Many experiments which were conducted on mammals, reptiles, birds and fish were based on the fact that animals were accustomed to spicific color. One color signified feeding, and the other did not. After a certain reaction to a particular color was developed after a while, its hue or brightness was gradually changed in order to make sure that the choice was not due to the amount of brightness.

It is safe to say that animals vision is monochrome if after changing the brightness, the animal ceases to react in a certain way to color. If it continues to perceive colors regardless of the shade or amount of brightness, then it sees the difference and is able to separate the two colors from each other. However, this still does not give a 100% answer about color sensitivity.

And the main problem is that almost every kind of animal perceives colors in its own way.
